At Astra Radiology, HSGs are usually done under ultrasound guidance. A small catheter is introduced into the uterus and is held in place by inflating a small balloon. A contrast agent is then introduced into the uterus and fallopian tubes via the catheter. The test shows if the uterine cavity is normal and if the fallopian tubes are open. Fibroids, scar tissue, or polyps in the uterus can also be identified.

When the small balloon is inflated, you may experience some mild cramping, similar to period pain. Please take some oral pain relief, such as Nurofen Plus, before the examination to help with this.

An HSG takes approximately 1 hour.

A Lipiodol HSG is performed on referral from a fertility specialist only.

It is a therapeutic procedure which has been shown to increase conception rates, particularly in women with endometriosis. Before this is done, patent fallopian tubes must be confirmed with either an HSG or Laparoscopy & Dye.

The procedure is very similar to a regular HSG. A small catheter is inserted into the cervix and up to 10 ml of Lipiodol (an oil-based radiographic contrast agent) is introduced into the uterus and fallopian tubes.

Usually this is easily performed within half an hour.

There is no specific preparation but, as with other HSGs, it should be timed with the menstrual cycle to occur between days 5 and 12 if possible. Taking Paracetamol and/or Ibuprofen an hour before the procedure is also recommended.
